Food waste is one of the big contradictions in our world. While some people are hungry and in need, a lot of food goes to the bin each day.
An ex-employee at Dunkin’ Donuts would not have that, though. He decided to donate leftover donuts to homeless people – and the company fired him for that.
Wasting Hundreds Of Donuts Each Day
At the end of each working day, Bryan Johnston had to throw away over 300 unsold donuts. Understandably, the waste broke his heart.
Instead of passively following the rules, the 16-year-old decided to do the right thing. That is why he gave the food to homeless people.
To raise awareness on this issue, he also uploaded a video of his good deed on TikTok. He consequently lost his job at Dunkin’ Donuts for breaking the rules.
Finding Solidarity On The Internet
For Bryan, losing his job was quite a shock, as he explained:
“It’s still very hard to look back to when I replay the whole situation in my head. It felt as though my manager didn’t care that I worked there for 5 months and she didn’t say anything like ‘sad to see you go’ or ‘thanks for being a part of the team.’”
Because of his story going viral on TikTok, people sent lots of love and supported his way. Some even donated money to help while he finds a new job, to his surprise:
“People also have been helping me financially until I find a stable source of income which I am beyond blessed for.”
Staying true to his good heart, Bryan then used Krispy Kreme donuts’ money and donated them to hospital staff.
A Force For Change
According to Bryan, corporations are too “greedy and lazy” to care about local communities. He also commented:
“They would rather just throw away the food at the end of the day instead of paying an employee a couple more man-hours to bring the food to a donation center. Even though it’s up to the store what to do with the waste, most store managers instruct us to throw out the food because they haven’t set up a program to donate. And that roots back to the company itself and not having proper procedures set up in place for the food waste, which I find extremely disappointing.”
While Dunkin’ Donuts, as a company, has a food donation program in place, single stores make their own decisions. Each franchise can choose to participate in it or not.
More Positive Actions To Come
For Bryan, this is only the beginning. In fact, he hopes to keep working to reduce food waste around him:
“I plan on using my voice to bring light to the issue of how much food waste goes on throughout America each day and how true a problem famine and world hunger is. If companies like Dunkin’ decided to someone reduce the food waste and/or donate the food to the hungry, issues like that would not be as huge of a problem. I still would want to grow on TikTok, making positive videos as well as comedy/lifestyle content, but I am hoping to get a lot of people on board with me on how big an issue is that is overseen by so many.”
Plans To Volunteer In The Future
His plans also include volunteering and collaborating with bigger corporations, like Feeding America. He concluded:
“But right now, I’m still kinda shaken by the fact, so many people on the internet support me and what I am doing/going to do. It gives me the motivation to continue to be a light in such difficult times in the world.”
People also shared their stories about food waste, while praising Bryan’s actions.
We are sure that this is just the first step for this great guy. For now, he surely made us more aware of the importance of not wasting good food.
