Certain decisions about a child's life and well-being should be solely made by his or her parents. Going ahead to make such decisions on their behalf without consulting them could be disastrous. This was the case with a family in Nottingham, England.
BBC News reported the arrest of a 44-year-old man, a 47-year old woman, and a 61-year-old doctor for circumcising a baby without permission. The baby in question is a grandchild to the man and woman in their 40s, his paternal grandparents.
The baby's mom instigated the arrest after she noticed that her child had been circumcised without her knowledge.
How She Found Out
The 3-month-old had been staying with his grandparents for a while. His mom finally picked him up, and when she got home, she decided to change his diapers. She was pretty horrified by what she saw while changing his diaper. She said:
"I opened the nappy and I ended up having to leave the room because I felt hysterical. It was just awful, really. It wasn't very nice. There was all blood there and stuff."
This happened in July 2013. For years, this mom, who chose to remain anonymous, has been fighting to get justice. In a quest to do so, she enlisted social services and the Nottinghamshire police in 2014. They investigated the case but decided that no crime had taken place.
She thus decided to team up with the anti-circumcision group Men Do Complain and Saimo Chahal QC, a human rights lawyer. Things began to change after that. They took it up as a case of male genital mutilation. According to the mom,
"It is even illegal to dock dog's tails. I have come home crying my eyes out, thinking a dog has more rights than my child. There is something seriously not right with it all. You can protect a dog. You can protect a girl, but not a boy."
Suspects Were Finally Arrested
In June 2017, the grandparents and the doctor in question were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. The doctor, Balvinder Mehat, was suspended for a month. There though, is no news on whether the case proceeded against the baby's grandparents or not. What became of the entire case is still unclear.
For some, this might be an issue that could have been sorted in-house. But, for this mom, it was not. What would you have done?
