Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to recruit, groom, and abuse underage girls and will spend 20 years in jail.

The former socialite, 60, is seen as a pivotal instrument in Jeffrey Epstein's decades of abuse of numerous victims.

Maxwell, the daughter of the British media mogul Robert Maxwell, was convicted in a New York federal court jury of sex trafficking, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts and two conspiracy charges.

The prosecution asked for 30 to 55 years, while the defense asked for a sentence of only five years.

Maxwell, Epstein's lifelong companion, and girlfriend, at some point, brushed shoulders with some of the most influential people.

When she spoke to the jury, she called Epstein "a manipulative, cunning and controlling man who lived a profoundly compartmentalized life."

She denied ever abusing anyone, as the assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe said that Ghislaine was a "person who was indifferent to the suffering of other human beings."

Four women spoke at the hearing, explaining not only what they went through but how Ghislaine and Epstein operated.

The sentencing was the culmination of a prosecution that documented how Epstein and Maxwell flaunted their wealth and associations with famous people to groom girls and then exploit them.

Ghislaine was caught in 2020, and her trial was not open to the public.
