Human remains, including a fetus and tongues dating back more than 50 years were found in jars in the crawlspace of a house that once belonged to a university professor.

An inspector found at least six jars containing body parts in the crawlspace during an inspection of a home's foundation in Gainesville, Florida.

The find horrified an inspector who shared the news on social media.

The inspector wrote:

"I discovered 8-10 plastic jars."

"I looked at them and noticed masking tape with a single name on each. First names. Human names like Angela, Heather, Virginia, etc."

"I was going to continue the inspection, but…those first names didn't sit right with me."

He continued:

"I went back and found that one jar was rusted through the top."

"Inside, I saw a plastic bag and immediately what looked like small bones."

"I then removed the bag and realized it was actually a small infant child."

"Her first name was written on the exterior. The details of her little face were still very much preserved."

The jars also had dates on them, which helped detectives to quickly find a lead—at least one of those jars dated back to the 1960s.

Investigators linked this unsettling discovery to the works of Dr. Ronald Baughman, a former researcher, and professor at the University of Florida.

The professor's ex-wife said she forgot the jars were still in the home after Baughman brought his work home with him one day.

Baughman was an assistant professor of oral medicine in 1971 and specialized in the head and neck.

He published his studies in the 1970s and 80s.

Some of his research includes studies on canker sores, the lower jaw, oral cells in the mouth, oral herpes, and oral cancer.

When approached, Baughman had an immediate memory of the jars. His frankness over the matter shocked investigators at first.

Baughman knew what the jars were. He even remembered placing them there. His research team had entrusted him with keeping them in a cool, dark place to prevent spoilage.

As per reports, the professor claimed he simply forgot the remains after he divorced his wife and moved out in 1992.

Court documents confirmed he barely took anything from the house at the time.

His ex-wife, however, remained in the house ever since.

The jars also remained in the house until the ex-wife planned to do renovations on the property.

After hiring a contractor to assess the house, they found the jars with the remains.

The scene was a perfect set-up for a criminal background that turned out to be a misunderstanding.

To this day, investigators are still figuring whom the remains belonged to. The patients are probably long dead.

This is because most organ donations happen from verified organ donor corpses. It's also hard to find someone who's alive with no essential organs like the tongue.
