Orlando Hall, 49, was convicted of kidnapping and raping a 16-year-old Texan girl, Lisa Rene, then dousing her with gasoline and burying her alive in 1994.
26 years after his heinous crimes, the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, executed him through lethal injection.
Per a report by The Mirror, Hall was found guilty by an all-white jury, which his attorneys claimed was the result of racial discrimination, and his execution came after the US Supreme Court overturned a previous ruling blocking it on the grounds of the method used.
Reports state that Hall’s final words before the drug was administered were:
“I’m okay. Take care of yourselves. Tell my kids I love them.”
As an officer administered the drug—during the execution—Hall lifted his head, appeared to wince briefly, and twitched his feet.
He then mumbled to himself and twice opened his mouth wide, as if he was yawning.
Hall then took a few short, seemingly labored breaths to his last.
Soon after, an official with a stethoscope came into the execution chamber to check for a heartbeat before declaring him dead.
Hall was among five men facing charges in the abduction and death of Lisa Rene in 1994.
As per court documents, Hall was a marijuana trafficker in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He would sometimes buy his drugs in the Dallas area.
He arrived in Dallas on Sept. 24, 1994, where he met two brothers at a car wash.
He then gave them $4,700 with the expectation they would return later with the marijuana. The two men were Rene’s brothers.
However, the brother claimed they had lost the money after a robbery.
Hall and his accomplices figured they were lying. So, they track down the address of the brothers’ apartment in Arlington, Texas.
When Hall and three other men arrived at the apartment, the two brothers weren’t there. Lisa Rene was home alone.
The men then kidnapped Rene and drove her to a motel in Pine Bluff. They also sexually assaulted her during the drive and at the motel over the next two days.
Hall and two other men later took Rene to Byrd Lake Natural Area in Pine Bluff.
They led her to a gravesite they had dug a day earlier. Hall then placed a sheet over Rene´s head then hit her in the head with a shovel.
When she tried to flee, Hall and another man took turns hitting her with the shovel before dragging her into the grave.
They then doused her in gasoline before burying her alive.
Detectives tracked Rene down and found her body in the grave eight days later.
A coroner determined Rene was still alive when the attackers buried her and died of asphyxiation in the grave.
Commenting on the case, retired Arlington detective John Stanton stated:
“[Rene] was studying for a test and had her textbooks on the couch when these guys came knocking on the front door… It was one that I won’t ever forget. This one was particularly heinous.”
Following the execution, Rene’s sister, Pearl, said their family is finally at peace the case is over.
“We have been dealing with this for 26 years. Now we’re having to relive the tragic nightmare that our beloved Lisa went through.”
