Is Johnny Depp set to star in Beetlejuice 2? New rumors suggest that the embattled actor may soon be making his return to the big screen, sending fans into a frenzy.
Depp has produced some of the most well-loved and iconic characters in the film industry. From his unforgettable role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films to Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Depp has garnered a huge fan base.
And Beetlejuice fans are rejoicing as it seems like Depp will join the cast for the movie's sequel, which is set to release in 2025.
The rumors started at the end of his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Fans noticed that Depp's name appeared when searching for the upcoming Beetlejuice 2 on Google. Alongside Depp are Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, both of whom are rumored to be reprising their roles from the 1988 original film.
The 1998 film revolved around a dead married couple — played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis — who are resurrected as gormless ghosts who become hell-bent on haunting an irritating family out of their dream home.
As per IMDb, Arrested Development's Will Arnett will appear as the Jersey Devil in the upcoming sequel, while Stranger Things' David Harbour will play a 'struggling real estate agent.'
As for the plot, the IMDb listing states:
"The original cast and crew plus new additions return when Beetlejuice is found homeless in the netherworld."
"He takes it upon himself to travel back to the mortal world seeking comfort, only to find the Maitland house has blown up due to a gas leak, leaving our beloved characters without a humble home to share the love."
"In search of guidance, the crew travels down to the Netherworld only to find there's a new sheriff in these parts, The Jersey Devil (Will Arnett)."
Fans would be overjoyed to see Depp in the sequel, especially after his grueling days in court fighting to prove he's not a domestic abuser.
With more than 30 years between films, there have been a lot of talks about the possibility of a Beetlejuice sequel.
Back in 2019, Larry Wilson, a screenwriter of the original film, told USA Today:
"The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a Beetlejuice sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film. And that's not easy."
"Beetlejuice was lightning in a bottle. But there have been discussions since it really shocked everyone in 1988."
However, Winona Ryder recently appeared to confirm the sequel, telling USA Today:
"I'm in! I'm excited, and I'm hopeful that it'll happen."
"The only way we would do it is if everything was perfect and we had all the people – obviously Michael [Keaton] and Tim [Burton]."
"That's what I love about Tim. He's such a perfectionist."
"He can't do something unless it's completely his vision. It'll happen if it can happen the perfect way."
If Depp's rumors are true, the movie will again reunite Depp with his long-standing director Tim Burton, who has cast Depp in eight of his films, including Ed Wood and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
