Many across the country are mourning the loss of Deputy Ryan Hendrix of Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

The 35-year-old NC cop and Marine veteran died when responding to a 911 call about car tampering and a shooting.

A person had called 911 after finding two suspects breaking into a car.

According to reports, the person then took a gun and confronted the suspects.

One of the suspects, however, took a gun from the car and fired at the person.

Hendrix and two other deputies arrived at the scene and confronted the suspects.

The man first complied with commands from the officers. But then, he grabbed a gun and opened fire, striking Hendrix in the face.

The two other deputies with Hendrix returned fire and killed the suspect, named Robert Ray Doss Jr.

According to the police report, Doss was a 'career criminal with arrests in Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia.' He was also wanted on a warrant for a parole violation.

After the shooting, officers rushed Hendrix to the hospital. However, he didn't survive.

Taking to Facebook, the sheriff's office wrote:

"It is with a very heavy heart the family of Deputy Ryan Hendrix and Sheriff Lowell Griffin announce Ryan's passing."

"Early this morning while the world slept, Ryan responded to assist a family needing help. Sadly, they became innocent victims of a violent encounter."

The post added:

"Ryan's family wants everyone to know that 'Ryan was doing the job he was born to do. He died doing the job he loved.'"

Hendrix left behind two kids — six and nine — and a fiancée, whom he was to marry in October.

He served the Henderson County Sheriff's Office for eight years.

Hendrix was also an organ donor. He will 'continue to help others for a lifetime, even after making the ultimate sacrifice.'

Sharing his tribute, Sheriff Lowell Griffin said:

"Hendrix was an exemplary officer who was also a member of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office SWAT team."

"[He also served] as a field training officer and [assisted] in many capacities."

Also, North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis shared a tribute on Twitter, writing:

"God bless the family of... Deputy Ryan Hendrix. [He] who was shot and killed in the line of duty."

In partnership with the North Carolina Police Benevolent Foundation, the sheriff's office has set up a fundraising page for Hendrix's family.
