Have you ever been so hyped up about something only to discover that you might have set your expectations too high? Well, you're not alone. Everyone has been there, and it's normal. We sometimes get so enthusiastic about something that we forget to stop and remind ourselves that things don't always go the way that we planned.
The 'expectation vs. reality' discussion is not a new one. It has been proven countless times that expectations do breed disappointment, and that's just reality.
It is therefore vital to teaching ourselves to understand and accept the fact that people and situations are unpredictable and sometimes we can do nothing to change it. Some situations are beyond our control, and all that's left is for us to accept reality and move on. Feeling disappointed and annoyed won't change the reality. Trying to force things only makes it worse for ourselves.
The best thing to do is to remain positive and open-minded about life. Be flexible enough to invest in the present as opposed to people.
No one is saying that you should not have expectations at all. You should have things to look forward to, but before you do that, here are a couple of things you should think about before having those expectations.
People are different, and by them being so, they are bound to have different opinions. Do not expect people to have the same opinions as you. If you do, you will be setting yourself up for disappointments. Take different opinions as a learning opportunity. It is a great way to better yourself.
How happy you are is totally dependent on you. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you stop relying on other people to make you happy. If you are in a relationship, do not let your partner's happiness or lack thereof determine how happy you are. We are responsible for our own happiness, not our partners.
Everyone strives to be the best version of themselves and sometimes this urge to be perfect leads us down the wrong path. Trying to make someone else perfect for you can be quite disappointing and most often impossible. Do not impose your will on someone as you struggle to make them perfect. It is a sure way to get disappointed. Work on yourself instead, you deserve it.
Sometimes we expect our loved ones to do the things we want exactly the way we envisioned them to in our minds. This is where most misunderstandings come from. You cannot expect someone to read your mind and do exactly what you saw them do. Instead, communicate clearly to them what you expect them to do. They cannot read your mind.
People are different
What works for you might totally fail to work for someone else. You, therefore, cannot force someone to act in some sort of way simply because it works perfectly for you. The result may be a total disappointment.
This is the ultimate way to avoid disappointments. You have to accept that you will continue being disappointed because that is simply part of life. It's not unfair to us; it happens to everyone. Accept that no one is perfect, accept that all people are different, accept, accept, accept.
Take a look at all the times you got disappointed by someone or something and try to implement what you have just read. You will see that had you expected a little bit less, you would have avoided getting disappointed. If you practice the advice mentioned above, you will see that you will have a lot less to be disappointed about.
