A trophy hunter narrowly escaped death after a dying 1,700-pound buffalo gored him with its horns. The incident left the hunter with a 'coke can-sized' wound in his right leg.
Chris McSherry, 35, was bow hunting with a friend at Port Bradshaw, off the northeast coast of the Northern Territory.
He came across a prize buffalo that he quickly shot several times.
While McSherry waited confidently for the animal to drop dead from his attack, the mighty bull charged him instead.

McSherry told NT News:
"I managed to turn and get about three steps in before he was on my back and gored his horns into my upper thigh, pushing me forward."
The buffalo's revenge wasn't over yet.
It plunged its horns through McSherry's right leg, raised him up, and flung him into the air.
McSherry recalled:
"[The buffalo] put the horns into me again, picked me up by the right leg, and flung me about three meters."
McSherry then fell, and the buffalo continued to push him into the ground with its horns.
Luckily, the 35-year-old managed to narrowly escape by rolling a few meters away from the buffalo.
The buffalo then watched him get to his feet and hobble away. It eventually died from its wounds.
McSherry was then rushed to Gove Hospital. He was later flown to Darwin for surgery on several deep wounds across his lower body.

McSherry, almost proudly, said:
"The buffalo left me with some decent wounds. There's an eight-inch gash right under my bum."
He wouldn't have survived if the buffalo had aimed its horns any higher, McSherry added.

McSherry has been a hunter for over 20 years.
The father-of-five has also narrowly escaped death in the past when a crocodile charged him on a spearfishing trip.
And the near-death experiences, however, have done little to cull McSherry's affection for hunting.
He even told news outlets that he wouldn't let any close calls stop him from hunting again.
And on Facebook, McSherry wrote:
"Buff is dead. I'm alive (this time). [I] hope to be back with my family and friends soon, thanks for all the well wishes on other posts."
"I appreciate the love and support and will live to HUNT another day."
Only time will tell what fate has in store for the hunter.
Next time, possibly, it won't be a can-sized hole in his leg.
