Drew Barrymore apologized for insensitive comments regarding the Depp vs. Heard trial.
The actress was accused of "making light" of the defamation lawsuit centered around alleged abuse.

Before we get to Barrymore's apology, here is a recap of what happened and how we got to the trial between the ex-spouse.
It's Been A Difficult Couple Of Years For Johnny Depp

The famous actor has been in the spotlight since the late 80s.
However, in the past six years, Depp has been involved in a series of domestic abuse allegations by Amber Heard.
Heard and Depp met on the set of The Rum Diaries and started dating some time later.
They Were The Cool Hollywood Couple

Shortly after ending his 14-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp was spotted with a much younger, beautiful actress, Amber Heard.
After a couple of years of dating, the two got engaged in 2014.
Amber and Johnny married in February 2015.
Things Went South Quickly

Months after the wedding, Depp hurt his hand.
At the time, there were numerous stories about what happened, but the most common one was that Depp was "smashing bottles and windows" during a heated argument with his wife."
That was the official version of how Depp almost lost his finger.
Abuse Allegations Came To Light

In the following year, many started questioning the state of marriage between the two actors.
It was not a huge surprise when people learned that Amber Heard filed for a divorce 15 months after the couple tied the knot.
Though many suspected "irreconcilable differences," there were glimpses of the alleged abuse.
The Alleged Assault

The couple was separated when Amber Heard asked for a restraining order against Johnny Depp.
However, she retracted her allegations just before the hearing.
Heard had alleged that the actor had hit her on several occasions and showed video footage of him flinging a glass of wine across the room.
Johnny Depp's Career In Shambles

The couple's divorce in late 2016 brought temporary peace. However, in 2018, Amber wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post.
It said that "two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture's wrath for women who speak out."
Depp Denied The Allegations

Only four days after the article came out, Depp was dropped by Disney. Depp lost the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Though Disney did not cite Amber's op-ed, it was assumed they wanted to distance themselves from the troubled actor.
His appearance in the Fantastic Beasts sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, was heavily criticized.
Depp Files A Defamation Lawsuit Against Heard

After losing the support of some of his fans, and movie projects, Depp decided to tell his side of the story.
Shockingly, Depp alleges he was the victim of domestic abuse.

Depp's defamation lawsuit read:
"The op-ed [Heard's article] depended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her."
The lawsuit claims that Amber Heard's claims were "categorically and demonstrably false."
The Damning Allegations Continued

Depp's lawsuit further said:
"She hit, punched, and kicked me. She also repeatedly and frequently threw objects into my body and head, including heavy bottles, soda cans, burning candles, television remote controls, and paint thinner cans, which severely injured me."
In a shocking twist, Daily Mail published audio where Amber admits to hitting Depp.
Amber Was Taunting Depp

In the audio, the voice of Amber Heard allegedly says:
"I did not f-----g deck you. I f-----g was hitting you. I don't know what the motion of my actual hand was. But you're fine. I did not hurt you. I did not punch you. I was hitting you."

The audio continued:
"You are such a baby. Grow the f*** up, Johnny. You poke an animal enough, it is eventually, it doesn't matter how friendly it is, it's not cool."
In The Meantime, Depp Lost A Libel Case

Johnny Depp went against The Sun as in their 2018 article, the papers called him a "wife-beater."
The exes met in the London courtroom for a trial that lasted for three weeks.
Both parties showed more evidence of alleged abuse and more allegations. Depp lost the case, but his team was ready to continue the fight.
Depp's Team Claimed That Amber Fabricated Two Black Eyes

Depp's lawyer, Benjamin Chew, argued:
"Ms. Heard's counsel has repeatedly used these phony photographs at deposition."
He believes the LA Police Department "disavowed the photographs" given to the court and "did not depict what they saw."
Chew confirmed that LAPD "found no injury upon Ms. Heard and no disruption to the penthouses" upon inspection."
More Allegations Against Amber

Chew argued:
"Ms. Heard and her friends then fabricated photos that she used to obtain an ex parte TRO [temporary restraining order] and a $7 million divorce settlement which Ms. Heard falsely testified in London she gave to the ACLU and, more scandalously, to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles; sick children with cancer."
Depp's attorneys demonstrated that ACLU did not get the full payment, but 1,3 out of 3,5 million dollars.

Chew further added that the photos were doctored:
"Ms. Heard or someone on her behalf doctored those photographs three years later. When that came up in her testimony in London, Ms. Heard falsely denied it. In short, Your Honour, without forensic imaging, Mr. Neumeister cannot properly assess or verify Ms. Heard's data."
Celebrities Involved In The Case

Since the trial started, we have heard about numerous celebrities connected to the couple.
James Franco, Elon Musk, and Paul Bettany were all supposed to testify, but we found last week that won't happen.
Text messages and email conversations will include Jason Momoa, James Wan, Bettany, JK Rowling, and guitarist Jack White. Ellen Barkin might appear as a witness for Amber Heard.
Tarnished Reputation

Depp is suing Heard for defamation. He claims that his reputation has been tarnished because of what she has said since the divorce. Heard is countersuing for double the amount, 100 million dollars.
That's why we have already heard so many famous names.
Depp Takes The Stand

On April 19, Johnny Depp testified in Fairfax County courthouse, calling Amber's claims "heinous and disturbing."
He said that her allegations were "criminal acts against me that were not based in any species of truth."
Depp Insists He Never Hit A Woman

During his testimony, the actor said:
"Never did I myself reach the point of striking Miss Heard in any way, nor have I ever struck any woman in my life. Since I knew there was no truth to it whatsoever, I felt it my responsibility to stand up, not only for myself in that instance, but stand up for my children."

Johnny added how these allegations affected his two children:
"I thought it was diabolical that my children would have to go to school and have their friends or people in the school approach them with the infamous People Magazine cover with Miss Heard with a dark bruise on her face."
Depp Bares It All

Depp said he was a "private person" who had to "come up here and sit before you all and spill the truth is quite exposing, and it's unfortunate that it's not only exposing for myself, it's exposing for my family, it's exposing for Miss Heard, it never had to go in this direction."
He added his goal was "the truth," and he isn't embarrassed because "I know I'm doing the right thing."
Depp's Side Of The Relationship With Heard

Depp's testimony ended on April 26, and many were shocked and touched by his revelations.
He did not shy away from admitting his addiction battles. However, the actor also said that Amber threw a bottle at him, and that's how he almost lost a finger.
He also apologized for several disturbing text messages.
The Petition To Remove Amber Heard From Aquaman 2 Reaches New Heights

The petition called "Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2" was started three years ago. It surpassed 3 million signatures.
The petition reads:
"Amber Heard has been exposed as a domestic abuser by Johnny Depp in his $50 million lawsuit."
"Johnny Depp describes many incidents of domestic abuse that he suffered at the hands of his (then) wife Amber Heard, including one incident where she punched him twice in the face and another where she shattered his finger with a vodka bottle, and his finger had to be surgically reattached."

The petition reminded the world about Amber's past:
"Also, Amber Heard was arrested in 2009 for abusing a former domestic partner, Tasya Van Ree, demonstrating a repeated pattern of abuse by Amber Heard."
The creator of the petition, Jeanne Larson, concluded:
"Since Heard's divorce from Johnny Depp, she has systematically crusaded to ruin Depp in Hollywood, repeating multiple accounts of fake incidents in which she had actually abused Johnny Depp but lied and created false accounts of him being the abuser."
Men Are Victims Of Domestic Violence

In the petition, it states:
"Men are victims of domestic abuse, just like women. This must be recognized, and action must be taken to prevent a known abuser from being celebrated within the entertainment industry."
This is one of the reasons many people believe that Depp was abused.
Not Everyone Is Invested In The Trial

Drew Barrymore said the trial was "a seven-layer dip of insanity" on her talk show.
The actress expressed:
"I know that these are two people's real lives, and I know what it's like to have your life put out in public. I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information that nobody had to know. This is crazy!"
Barrymore Faces Backlash

After online backlash, the actress posted an Instagram video saying:
"It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard."
"And for that, I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself."
Barrymore's Apology Sounds Sincere

Drew added:
"All I want to do is be a good person."
"I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person, and I very much appreciate the depth of this, and I will grow and change from it… And I thank everyone helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you."
Though some will doubt her honesty, Drew simply is not as interested in the case as others. However, we believe that the need to learn is always positive. What do you think about this apology?
