In 2011, Johnny Depp told the Daily Mail:
"She was wearing a dress with an exposed back, and I saw that back and that neck, and then she turned around, and I saw those eyes, and — boom! You have this feeling — I can't explain what it was, but I had it when I met her. I saw her across a room and thought: 'What's happening to me?'"
He was talking about how he felt when he saw Vanessa Paradis again, after a while of being just an acquaintance. He met the woman who willingly made him ditch his single life in 1998 while filming The Ninth Gate. Depp and Paradis were in a 14-year relationship that ended when he met Amber Heard.
In those years, they had two kids together; Lily-Rose and Jack. Paradis changed Depp's approach to relationships for good. He went from being the man who loved the freedom singleness afforded him to being one who wanted to double up.
In the interview, he said:
"My life as a single man was over."
Vanessa also noticed Depp's facial expression at the time and was curious to know what was happening to him.
Before meeting Paradis, he had dated a few women, but none of those relationships was like what he had with her.
In 1983, he got married for the first time to Lori Anne Allison, who was only 20 years old at the time. They got divorced two years later.
He later dated Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Gray from Dirty Dancing, but those relationships were short-lived.
In 1990, he started dating Winona Ryder from Edward Scissorshand and even got a tattoo that read: "Winona forever." Well, forever was only three years because they split in 1993.
Next, he dated Kate Moss, who once told Vanity Fair that Depp treated her in a way no one had been able to, even though they were together for a short time.
Then he met Vanessa Paradis, and they were together for 14 years, although they never got married. Their kids, Lily-Rose Depp, a model for Chanel, is now 16 years old, while her younger brother, Jack Depp, is 14.
The reason for their split was discussed amongst fans. Many questions were asked, but Depp's publicist said that they were "amicably separated" and implored the public to "please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children."
There were still speculations as to why they broke up. One of such was that Johnny Depp met Amber Heard, which was behind the couple's split.
Speaking about the divorce between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis took Depp's side, saying:
"I can say he was never violent or abusive to me. I have seen that these outrageous statements have been really distressing and also caused damage to his career because, unfortunately, people have gone on believing these false facts. This is so upsetting as he has helped so many people in his personal and professional life, with kindness and generosity."
As opposed to Heard's claims of Depp being an abuser, Paradis, who was with him for 14 years, said that what Heard described was "nothing like the true Johnny I have known."
