depp gets a legal victory

Johhny Depp scored another legal victory in the ongoing battle against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

In the newest twist, a Virginia judge overruled Amber Heard’s request to dismiss Johnny Depp’s lawsuit. Depp is suing his ex for defamation after she penned an op-ed for Washinton Post, presenting herself as a victim of domestic violence.

Not only was this not proved, but part of their divorce deal was for both to sign the NDA.

Though Depp lost a case against The Sun, a British tabloid, for calling him a “wife-beater,” he scored the second victory in a row.

The Virginia judge stated that though the case seems similar to the one against The Sun, the statements are “inherently different.”

The Legal Battles Are On-going Five Years After The Divorce

It looks like Depp has nothing to lose at this point. He lost jobs, while Heard is part of a large franchise with her role in Aquaman.

Though he was losing at first, it seems that the famed actor’s luck is changing.

Just weeks ago, the New York judge approved his request to look into Amber Heard’s settlement promises.

Fairfax County Chief Judge Penney Azcarate explained:

“Defendant argues she was in privity with The Sun because they both had the same interest in the case.”

The Sun’s interests were based on whether the statements the newspaper published were false. Defendant’s interests relate to whether the statements she published were false.”

Simply said, The Sun lawsuit was not about Amber Heard in legal terms. In fact, her name didn’t even come up in the lawsuit.

In fact, The Sun case goes back to November 2020, while Heard’s op-ed is from December 2018. She wrote:

“I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”

Ben Chew, Depp’s lawyer, told Deadline his client was “most gratified by the Court’s decision.”

If Depp scores a victory, it is safe to say that some other claims against him will be revisited.

The exes divorced in 2016. They were married only for a year and a half.

Amber Heard got a 7 million dollar settlement, and she made a public promise to donate the money to two charities: the American Civil Liberties Union and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Depp’s team is now challenging her promises, as the Virginia case worth 50 million dollars is on.
