The Sun reports that the Russian dad who stabbed his friend to death after allegedly seeing a video of the man raping his 8-year-old daughter has been acquitted of all charges.
34-year-old Vyacheslav M. was said to have discovered videos of his 32-year-old friend, Oleg Sviridov, abusing his daughter on Sviridov's phone. He confronted the abuser and allegedly killed him during a fight.
Vyacheslav was arrested soon after, but his arrest met with public disapproval. The people of Russia believe that he is a hero, not a murderer, and has called for his release.
This outcry seems to be yielding expected results.
Shortly after Sviridov's death, the police launched a full-fledged murder investigation.
Although Vyacheslav was released on bail, he seemed to have very slim chances of getting off scot-free as the case's outcome remained unclear for many months.
This week, the police decided to drop any potential charges against him. Although he won't be charged with murder, he will face prosecution for allegedly instigating Sviridov to take his own life.
Vyacheslav is "pleased" with this outcome. He had never admitted to committing murder and is glad that he won't be convicted for long if he is found guilty of this lesser offense.
He is also happy that he no longer has to wear an electronic tag as he waits for a trial date set for later this year.
According to some sources, Vyacheslav was acquitted because "detailed forensic evidence" proves that he did not kill his alleged pedophile friend, who used to babysit his daughter from time to time.
It remains unclear how Sviridov's body ended up in the forest where he was found dead.
This latest development satisfies over 2,500 people who signed a petition for Vyacheslav to be fully acquitted. They view what he did as "saving our children by ridding us of a child sex attacker."
