Charity Turns Parking Lots Into Safe Haven For The Homeless At Night

The world has seen a rise in homelessness in recent years, and an Australian charity, Beddown, has decided to take proactive action and help these people in need.

Homelessness is never a choice but is often due to one or a series of unfortunate events such as illness, debt, job loss, inability to find work because of poor health, inadequate healthcare, and lack of money to pay mortgage or rent.

With no place to call home, the streets and bushes turn out to be their only option. They then become among thousands searching for food in the trash and seemingly invisible to the passing crowds.

So we should all be thankful for the many blessings bestowed upon us: the roof we live under, the food we eat, the freedom, and the list continues.

Seeing the horrible living conditions of the homeless, an Australian charity Beddown, decided to help these people. They came up with a creative idea to make shelters in places that's often vacant at night, like parking lots!

And when Norman McGillivray, founder of this non-profit charity, was walking through an empty parking lot one night, he saw the perfect space for a 'pop-up' shelter for the disadvantaged. After careful planning, willing partners, and collaborators, the charity was ready to give the idea a trial.

The creators of Beddown wrote on their Instagram page:

"We will look to get as close as we can to a proper comfortable bed to provide the homeless with a great night's sleep is our ultimate goal."

"Sleep deprivation is a massive issue for our homeless, so being in a place that offers shelter and is safe, secure, and comfortable we believe will have a big impact on those who use Beddown."

During the trial, the charity offered additional services to the guests, including doctors, nurses, dentists, and hairdressers. They also helped provide social services, gave them new clothing, and a place to clean themselves.

The charity said in one of their Instagram posts:

"It was great to start bringing the Beddown vision to life last night with a group of our awesome volunteers for the Dry Run. Thank you to our awesome group of volunteers who came in late on a Saturday night to help us with the trial and set-up some beds."

"Although, as expected we had a few challenges to overcome, it was awesome to start bringing Beddown to life. Beddown will provide an immediate response for those who sleep rough to access safe, secure shelter and access to a comfy bed and a great night's sleep."

"We will work with our other collaborative partners to provide long term solutions to transition our guests into accommodation, education and employment opportunities and ultimately put ourselves out of business (this is the vision)"

A few, of many comments from those who were part of the trial had this to say about their experience:

"After spending the week here, having a good sleep at night and a routine, it reminded me of life and I booked myself into Rehab for 6 months."

"It's the first time I have had a dream in years."

"I don't have to watch my back here."
