Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine could enter into a witness protection program following last week's appearance in Manhattan Federal Court as a star witness in the highly-publicized case against two Nine Trey Blood gang members.

According to reports, 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, agreed to testify against two New York gang members in the hope of getting a lesser sentence for his own charges.

Tekashi was previously facing a minimum of 47 years behind bars and a maximum of life in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering, conspiracy, firearm possession, drug trafficking, and other charges.

In a report published in the New York Times, prosecutors have indicated that the rapper could be heading for the witness program. The U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York agreed "not to prosecute [69] for the crimes set forth in Counts One through Nine" because of his cooperation.

Former FBI official Jay Kramer, who works on organized crime cases, explained that Tekashi could now go unrecognized despite his fame.

Kramer said:

"Despite how connected we are, and the appetite for social media content in this country, there are places where, if this kid gets a haircut and wears normal clothes, no one would know or care who he is."

Of course, there's the issue of Tekashi's distinctive look. Though his rainbow-dyed hair has been said to have faded out since his arrest, he has numerous tattoos on his face. But the government will help with that too.

According to reports, "United States Marshals Service, which runs the witness protection program, would pay for the removal of Mr. Hernandez's signature face tattoos."

After his testimony, it's unclear how many years Tekashi will spend behind bars. The sentencing has been pushed to next year, but obviously, he's at risk if he gets freed early.

The plea deal states:

"It is understood that the defendant's cooperation is likely to reveal the activities of individuals and that witness protection may be required at a later date."

The two gang members, Anthony "Harv" Ellson and Aljermiah "Nuke" Mack, are facing federal racketeering and firearm possession charges.

Ellson is also being tried for his involvement in the kidnapping and beating of Takeshi last year.

During Tekashi's testimony last week, new footage was revealed showing the moment the rapper was pulled from the car when the 2018 kidnapping took place.

In the tape, which is being used in the trial, one of the kidnappers threatens to shoot Tekashi. The rapper is then forced to offer substantial payment.
