Drexell & Honeybee's is a black-owned family-style restaurant in Brewton, Alabama. The restaurant became a sensation when people learned that there's no cash registry. Instead, you pay what you can, as the owners rely on donations only.
Husband-and-wife team Freddie and Lisa Thomas-McMillan, are working on lunchtimes from Tuesday to Thursday to feed Southern dishes from their daily-changing menu to anyone who's hungry.
There's no profit in this restaurant. The family works literally to buy more food and prepare it for those who can't afford a proper meal. So, even a thank you note here means a lot.
The McMillans really live for what they do. As they explained, there's a true joy whenever people leave their restaurant "with a full stomach, a full heart, and the understanding that you are loved and worthy of love."
Luckily, others recognize their good intentions, so they pay more. Others donate via the Drexell & Honeybee's website.
Lunch at Drexell and Honeybee's includes an entree and two sides, as well as a cornbread fritter or a yeast roll and tea. Oven-fried chicken is every customer's favorite.
Speaking about this unique project, Lisa Thomas-McMillan said:
"Hunger is a lonely feeling."
She's doing her part to help eliminate hunger through her nonprofit food bank and her donation-only restaurant. Apart from the devoted couple, volunteers help them, making this world a better place.
The couple built this amazing place all on their own. This is one of those real-life stories that made our hearts melt. We cannot wait to travel again and have a meal at Drexell and Honeybee's!
