Trying on a new look can be really exciting, but it has the power to change how others view you totally. With celebrities, it is no different. Any dramatic change to their look can be shocking for their fans.
We might have to petition that they run some of their looks by us before taking them on. Some of them totally throw us off guard, especially if the change turns out to be a mistake. Remember Jennifer Grey’s nose? That was explosive! Like, Bang!
Now, Jim Parsons of the Big Bang Theory totally threw us off as well.
The Big Bang Theory Sitcom
Since this great sitcom ran for 12 seasons, the actors had to pretty much maintain the same look for over a decade. That look became the characteristic way we viewed them. It’s what we got used to.
Each of them had that one look they basically stuck with the entire time the show ran. That might be with the exception of Penny, who got a pixie cut at one point. The rest of them just rocked the same style: Raj was always in his sweaters, Bernadette in her tights and cute dresses, Leonard in corduroy pants, Howard with his bowl cut and turtlenecks, and so on.
What About Dorky Sheldon Cooper?
He had his own characteristic look, too, looking tall with his short, dark hair slicked to the side and t-shirts often emblazoned with some nerdy logo. Oh, not to forget is his smug expression.
Jim Parsons played this role, and he pretty much maintained those characteristics over the years. After the show ended in 2019, he kept Sheldon’s style. The only significant additions to the look were glasses and a little longer hair.
The good-looking man that he is, the longer hair made him look more relaxed and fun compared to Sheldon, and we were enjoying seeing him that way.
Parson Debuts A New Look
Jim recently shared a cover shot from L’Officiel magazine, and we saw him rocking brand new blonde highlights and an even longer hair. Sheldon would never wear hair that long! Neither can we imagine this person popping out of a ball pit with the words “Bazinga!” flying out of his mouth.
His fans commented on the picture, saying that he looked ‘unrecognizable’ in his new ‘do.’ One said, “I didn’t even realize who this was at first!”. Another asked, “Sheldon, is that you?!”
He really got many people talking with his new, daring look, and not all of them had nice things to say. One person said on Twitter, “This looks like Robert Pattison in a Jim Parsons costume.” Does that sound a little mean to just me? Well, it’s unfair to both men.
We all know who will have our hearts should we conduct an Edward Cullen vs. Sheldon Cooper poll. But Parsons looks absolutely dashing in this.
Jim Parsons Is Not The Only Big Bang Theory Star To Rock A New Look
For a new Netflix role, we see our beloved dorky Raj Koothrappali played by Kunal Nayyar in a collared shirt under a sweater. He also rocks longer, curly hair.
In the trailer for the show, Criminal, he shows off a full beard and a much shorter cut. In the show, he portrayed a hardened criminal.
His fans were also pretty shocked by this transformation, but he looked as cute as ever, rocking either look.
Kunal Wants To Be Known For Being More Than Raj
When talking about his new role and look, he said: “I wanted to make sure that whatever I did next was like, ‘Wait, who is this? Oh my God. Is that the guy from the Big Bang?’, as opposed to ‘Oh, there’s Raj playing a killer?”
He did great because although being Raj brought him to the limelight, he embodies his new roles such that we see him in the light of his individual roles.
Shaking Off The Association Of A Character From A Previous Role
It is never easy to shake off an association to a character everyone connected with, especially on a popular sitcom like The Big Bang that ran for so long.
Talking about how hard he would have to work to disassociate himself from the Raj character, Kunal said: “Physically, I’m so recognizable from my voice, I’m so recognizable from my face.”
No one should be confusing Raj for this new character because if for nothing, he is not wearing a sweater…
Big Bang Is Really Over
Although there are reruns here and there from time to time, it is gradually sinking in that the show is over. It might be easy to forget that with the replays, but as each of the characters gradually abandon their iconic looks, the more it sinks in.
We can’t wait for Simon Helberg to ditch Howard Holowitz’ bowl cut, though.
Personally, I don’t mind Jim Parsons’ new look. What are your thoughts on it? Hit or Miss?
