People often debate on which diet is best for a healthy life. Some adopted the food regime of our ancestors, the hunter-gatherers of the Paleolithic age.
Restaurant Sauvage in Berlin serves exclusively dishes made from ingredients you could find in the Stone Age. Forget sugar, cheese, and white bread!
The Stone Age Menu Of Sauvage
'Sauvage' is a French word that means 'wild,' 'savage,' just like life in the Stone Age must have been. In this Berlin restaurant, guests know exactly which ingredients are on their plate.
Some of the dishes on the menu include smoked salmon with herbs dressing and salads with olives, capers, and pine nuts. On the side, enjoy gluten-free bread with olive tapenades or some nut-based butter.
If you have a sweet tooth, fear not: they do serve desserts. You can choose between spicy pumpkin pie or several cakes, gluten- and sugar-free, of course.
Living The Paleo Life
The Paleolithic diet includes organic, non-processed food that was available in the Stone Age. Think fruit and vegetables, nuts, herbs, seeds, meat, fish, eggs.
Some people, though, are not satisfied with just a diet and want to reap all of the benefits of a caveman's life. Their exercise routines are made of barefoot jogging and weight-lifting with boulders.
Those who go for the gold star also try to lose blood, like our ancestors would while hunting regularly. No worries though, it is not what you think: they donate blood.
A Trend That Is Here To Stay
The Paleo diet trend originated in the United States, then spread to the rest of the world. Leite-Poço, the co-owner of restaurant Sauvage, explains:
"Right now, the trend is probably strongest in the United States, where people who have had enough of the fast-food way of life and generations of illness have taken it up."
Despite serving only Stone Age food, the cooks are allowed to use modern kitchen supplies. Leite-Poço continues:
"Of course, we don't cook over an open fire. And we try to avoid using it - but we do have a microwave in the kitchen."
Whether you want to get healthier or you just drooled at the pictures of inviting Paleo food, maybe it is time to give it a try.
