Bar leaves notes thanking its patrons for not drunk driving.

As the temperatures rise, so do concerns about drunk or "buzzed" driving.

During weekends, holidays, and summer months, the number of accidents caused by impaired or drunk drivers has been reportedly rising. As scary as it is, there's still some hope to combat this issue.

Safer road activists are coming up with smart ways that'll help reduced drunk driving, with some drinking establishments going out of their ways to reward patrons for not driving after they've had a few.

One such entertainment establishment is The Union Bar in Gering, Nebraska. Though many bars and restaurants don't let car owners leave their vehicles in the parking lots overnight, this pub takes a much creative approach.

The management of The Union Bar and Grill rewards patrons who decide not to drive home after spending time drinking at the bar.

Janelle Martin explains on her Facebook page that she and her husband were surprised to find what we all fear after a night out of drinking: a slip of paper under the windscreen wiper.

But this time, it wasn't a ticket or an angry note. It was a note from the Canadian bar thanking them for not drunk driving.

The note read:

"Dear Union Bar and Grill Park Guest,

Just wanted to thank you for leaving your car parked overnight. I'm not sure if you consumed alcohol at our restaurant or not, but we want to thank you for not drinking and driving.

Bring this letter to the bar, and we will give you a hamburger and French fries. Please accept this as a thank you for being responsible. Life is valuable, have a great day."

Instead of driving home after a few drinks, Martin opted to call his wife to pick him up. And when he returned to pick his car the next day, he was pleasantly surprised that his choice earned him not only respect but also a free burger and fries.

Scott and Carla Swanson, co-owner of The Union Bar and Grill, know that a free meal is a small price to pay in exchange for a bigger price of keeping their streets safe from reckless drivers.

Scott Swanson spoke to the World-Herald:

"It's a $7 burger, and if it keeps someone out of jail or keeps someone from killing someone, it's d*** well worth it."

The Union Bar and Grill isn't the only establishment helping combat drunk driving. Mack's Tavern in Ohio also rewards patrons for not driving after drinking.
