Anthony Bourdain’s Partner Speaks Out About His Death
Published in Jun 2018 / Updated in Aug 2021
Anthony Bourdain was well-loved among celebrities and regular people. His authentic, honest nature and the way he passionately talked about traveling, foods, and music made him the most celebrated chef globally.
His death in 2018 brought tears to strangers, but it was his family that will always feel the void. Bourdain was separated from his wife, Ottavia Busia, but they remained friends. They had a daughter, and Bourdain was a proud and devoted dad.
Two years before he took his own life, Bourdain started dating an Italian actress/director Asia Argento. Though it was brief, there’s no doubt that the two had a deep and genuine connection.
We can’t even imagine how she must have felt when she heard that her man is no longer alive.
Waves of sadness flooded the internet
From former President Obama to CNN and people inspired by Bourdain, everyone wanted to pay their respects to the late chef publicly.
Barack Obama was focused on Tony’s way of bringing people together:
Jeff Zucker, the network president of CNN, praised Bourdain’s work in Parts Unknown:
“Tony will be greatly missed not only for his work but also for the passion with which he did it.”
In an email to other CNN employees, Zucker described the chef as an “exceptional talent.”
Chrissy Teigen, Gordon Ramsay, Mandy Moore, Jamie Oliver, and others joined in mourning over social media networks.
Asia Argento and Bourdain’s love story
Argento, the Italian director, and actress, shared a brief statement:
“Anthony gave all of himself in everything that he did. His brilliant, fearless spirit touched and inspired so many, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was my love, my rock, my protector.
“I am beyond devastated. My thoughts are with this family. I would ask that you respect their privacy and mine.”
The couple met when Asia was a guest on Bourdain’s show. He was proud of her since she opened the door to feminism and social injustice to already socially active Bourdain.
Bourdain stood by her in Cannes after she told the world that she was one of Harvey Weinstein’s victims:
“In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes.”
“I was 21 years old. This festival was his hunting ground. I want to make a prediction. Harvey Weinstein will never be welcomed here ever again. He will live in disgrace, shunned by a film community that embraced him and covered up for his crimes.”
“And even tonight, sitting among you, there are those who still have to be held accountable for their conduct against women. For behavior that does not belong in this industry, does not belong in any industry or any workplace.”
The world was just learning about the industry’s best-kept secrets. Bourdain was among the first famous men to openly stand up against any kind of sexual abuse.
Bourdain – the feminist
After Argento had come forward with her story, Bourdain was supportive of the #MeToo movement and the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace. He praised his girlfriend’s courage:
“It was absolutely fearless to walk right into the lion’s den and say what she said, the way she said it.”
“It was an incredibly powerful moment, I thought. I am honored to know someone who has the strength and fearlessness to do something like that.”
People knew that Bourdain was ready to take down Weinstein. Sadly, he never lived to see the disgraced mogul behind bars.
Many gave their best to comfort Asia Argento, with lovely pictures and warm messages.
One Twitter users stated:
“My condolences to you and to your family,”
“He is such a sweetheart, and I love his adventures and exploring the world. He will be missed dearly.”
“I’m sure you brought such joy to his life. Although we cannot begin to understand, an entire world is grieving with you.”
Bourdain left Argento behind, as well as his then 11-year-old daughter, Ariana. But, their comfort lies in the simple fact that the late chef did make this world a bit better.
