an open letter to my mom

To my mom,

You are my truest friend, my hero, my role model… my everything.

Mom, you were always there for me, even when you had every reason not to be. Yes, I know I was not always good, but you always saw the best in me. Today, I believe for a fact that moms are heaven-sent.

You are a special person who loved me even when I hated myself. You believed in me even when I had given up on myself. I cannot imagine anyone having as much love as you do. I know deep in my heart that, in this world, nobody embodies God’s unending love better than you do.

You are absolutely irreplaceable.

So, although there is nothing as amazing as having to write this letter, there are few things I find almost too hard to handle. Here is why: I could go on and on about all the awesome things you have done for me. That’s the easy part. I could do it in my sleep.

On the other hand, what makes this so hard is that I couldn’t possibly remember every life-changing moment I have shared with you, and it would suck knowing that I forgot to show gratitude for every single thing you have ever done for me.

I love you mom.

As I sit here writing, I sadly realize there aren’t enough words in the world to express how deep my feelings towards you truly are. There aren’t even enough pages to write all you have ever done for me or enough time to document every precious moment we have ever shared.

Though, to be honest, not all the moments were delightful and memorable. I wasn’t the easiest kid to raise, and I can vividly recall all the times I drove you crazy with my childhood shenanigans.

Mom, there is no other relationship like the one we share. There never will be.

You are the most beautiful human being I have ever met. Even in the middle of the greatest adversities, when all my friends walked away, you clung ever closer until the storm had passed.

In all honesty, you are the most multi-talented person I know. To this day, I have no idea how you keep everything together. You are the best leader, my greatest supporter, the most amazing organizer, an incredibly resourceful problem solver, and an exceptional teacher. There was literally nothing too challenging for you.

Because of you, I believe in miracles.

You are the reason I’m am no longer afraid to go after what I want despite the odds stacked against me. That is why I have no idea how to say thank you. I am truly thankful to have you in my life. For as long as I live, I will never say that enough times.

Thank you for everything.

There aren’t enough words to explain how thankful I am for you. Were it not for you. I wouldn’t be where I am today.

You made everything look easy when it seemed impossible. You are an astonishing mother, and I cannot imagine having a better person next to me. I have learned how to be generous, caring, and loving, all because of you. With you, I always know I have someone to turn to whenever I need support.

Whatever challenge comes my way, whether large or small, I know you can help me deal with it. You are always there to ensure I make it. You fought for me, and you have shed countless tears on my account, hoping that I make it through one challenge or another.

Your undeniable love is without equal.

You put up with me when it was impossible to do so. I understand that years have changed a lot of things between us.

I am not as available for you as I once was. However, I am sure that even though I am not around anymore, you always think the best for me. Your greatest wish is that wherever I am, I have all I need.

I am sure that there are times you feel unwanted or forgotten.

However, I want you to understand that your effort does not go unnoticed. I am well aware of how much you are doing to keep the family together. When I think back on all the things that would be different if it were not for you, I feel overwhelmed by the gratitude I feel.

You are so forgiving and gracious, and you are the most hardworking woman I have ever known.

You have given up a lot for the sake of this family. You have sacrificed many things for the sake of this family and the sake of our happiness and comfort. Through you, I have learned what pure love is all about. All you care about is ensuring that your children have the best possible life.

It is truly a blessing to have you for a mom.

You loved me when I was unlovable, and through you, I learned the real meaning of unconditional love. Even when I hurt you, you gave me the warmest and the best hugs. Through you, I have learned how boundless forgiveness can be.

Nobody has ever believed in my dreams as you do, and through you, I found the courage to be more daring in pursuit of my dreams. You are the most courageous person I know.

Time and again, you put everything on the line, for my sake. I dreamed bigger because of you, and I recall you going out on a limb so I could have a present during my birthday.

Of course, I cannot forget how you came through for me when I was getting crushed under the weight of my student debts. You never mention it, but I am sure you gave up a lot to make that happen.

You were always there for me, and you taught me practically everything I know, including how to love myself and others. However, you still managed to teach me to be a better person by correcting me when I was wrong. You were always so passionate about pushing me to be better. I would have been lost without you. Even when I pushed you away and insisted on taking the wrong path, you were there to make sure I stayed on the right path.

I might not have appreciated it at the time, but as I write you this letter, I am beyond grateful that you did all this for me. More often than not, you did not have any other option but to put up with me, but your love made all this possible.

That must be why I miss you so much all the time.

Whenever I achieve another major milestone in life, I think of you. I have lost count of all the challenges I have overcome due to the skills you instilled in me as a child. It was so clear from early on that your children were your biggest priority.

I think of all the sacrifices you have made for my sake, and it brings tears to my eyes. That’s how thankful I am to have you in my life.

The one thing I truly look forward to is having daughters who will grow up to be as amazing as you are.

I will forever be grateful for the fact that you always made it your mission to be the best mom in the world. You have suffered so much on my account and endured a lot of pain because of me, and yet, your love for me was unwavering.

For me, every day is Mother’s Day.

You have been with me since day one, and I know we have a long journey ahead of us. I love you with everything I have. I am thankful to God for you.

Mom, you are the best.

We might not agree on every single thing, but know that I value your opinion, your love, your support, your care, your generosity… your everything. Every day, I am thankful to God for you.

One day, I hope I will be half the parent you were. Frankly, I don’t think it’s humanly possible to fill your shoes, and I am totally fine with that: you are one of a kind.

I love you mom, always will.
