A controlling and abusive man is jailed, after years of torturing his girlfriend. Mohammed Anwaar made his ex run on a treadmill and eat 50 canes of tuna each week to have a Kardashian butt.

If the woman refused, he'd beat her.

Anwaar was 27 at the time of the arrest, and his girlfriend, Gemma Doherty, was 30. She documented her horrifying experiences, and it's not for the weak-hearted.

Gemma said that he controlled her meals and clothes and always compared her to some glamourous models or Kim Kardashian. The emotional abuse got so bad that she felt like an animal, not a woman.

She stated:

"He wanted me to have abs and a huge ass – a big one like Kim Kardashian."

"He treated me like an animal – almost like a guinea pig in a laboratory."

The mother of two, formerly of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, continued explaining her everyday torture, which broke her spirit and sense of self:

"His favorite model was Gracyanne Barbosa, and he would make me look at her fitness routines and practice them."

She also told how Anwaar would look at pictures of Gracyanne while in the bathroom and would return to tell her she needed to do more sit-ups.

For two years, Ms. Doherty ate only tuna and beetroots.

"I would see my friends out, and they told me to eat more."

" I was wasting away when I was forced to lose all these calories every day."

It wasn't about the food, but the woman's state of mind:

"I felt like a zombie on autopilot and was at his beck and call, whatever and whenever."

Doherty's case is first of its kind

Anwaar admitted that his behavior was coercive and controlling, as well as nine counts of assault and criminal damage.

He was sentenced to two and a half years of jail time, and Judge Julian Goose said:

"You plainly have a history of violence."

The abuser's punishment included one year for his controlling behavior and 16 months for physical attacks. It helped that he was previously convicted of attracting several men.

Anwaar also held a knife to the woman's throat and threatened to kill her while her young son hid under the bed.

Why didn't she leave him sooner? When it comes to emotional and psychological abuse, many are afraid to speak up. Some feel ashamed, and others have no place to go. Many think that things will change, but that's never the case.

Additionally, the laws aren't entirely clear on the matter, and Ms. Doherty's case will help other victims since this was one of the first sentences of its kind.

Superintendent Natalie Shaw, the force leader for domestic abuse stated:

"I'm pleased that coercive control is now legally recognized, and we can continue to work with partners to effectively tackle domestic abuse cases and provide the support needed to those involved."
