Not too long ago a guy I was dating told me “I know this isn’t true but I feel like you don’t care if we don’t see each other”. To which I replied, “actually, I think you’re right”. Yeah, I know I was probably way too harsh but that was the moment I knew that the relationship was officially over.

If I’m truly honest with myself I know that there were so many warning signs letting me know that my relationship of three years was definitely, and completely over.

1. You don’t want to spend time with them

This might seem like an obvious one, and it was definitely my wake up call, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to accept. When spending time with the person you’re supposed to be in love with becomes a real chore, maybe you need to re think the relationship. Or at the very least re think your approach to the relationship.

2. You stop caring about the little things

Every morning when we woke up we’d text each other good morning. Towards the end though, I’d forget. I’d launch into whatever was on my mind at the moment and completely bypass the morning ritual. Maybe you have some little ritual that just doesn’t mean anything to you anymore.

3. “I love you” becomes a routine

“I love you”, those three little words that sure pack a punch. The moment those three little words don’t mean anything to you means something is wrong. Maybe you stop saying them as often, or maybe you say them because you feel you have too. Either way, something is definitely off. Maybe it’s time to have a heart to heart.

4. You start noticing others a little too much

Noticing other people is not what I would consider a deal breaker in a relationship. Starting to feel like the grass might be greener with someone else, might be a sign that something is wrong. The problems begin when instead of spending time with your significant other all you want to do is spend time with that friend you’re crushing on that may or may not be able to turn into something way down the road.

5. Communication becomes infrequent

This might be a no brainer but when you stop talking to your significant other, or don’t even want to talk to your significant other things might be nearing the end. Communication is key to any healthy relationship and when you stop wanting to communicate, maybe it’s time to reevaluate.

6. You get annoyed by the littlest things

You know that cute little thing he used to do like kiss your forehead or your cheek in front of his friends? When those things become annoying to you, then maybe it’s time to call it quits. Yeah, you could probably push past the feeling of annoyance but deep down inside you know that if you bottle it up eventually it’s going to blow up in your face.

7. You’re too busy

When I was stressed or tired of him I did everything I could to avoid spending time with him. Being busy is not a problem, being so busy you’re not willing to make time for your significant other however, is.

While these are no where near all the possible signs they are a few. But here’s the thing about these tips, they don’t necessarily mean the relationship is over. They could just mean that the relationship has some fixable problems. Personally, my recommendation would be to talk to your significant other, let them know how you feel. Maybe the problem can be fixed, then again, it could be a sign that the relationship has run its course.
