If you’re anything like me, getting ready for bed is a sacred ritual leading up to my favorite hobby – sleeping. Like most humans, sleep is super important to me and you definitely do not want to experience me when I don’t get enough. Always on the quest for ways to extend my length of shut-eye, I scoured the National Sleep Foundation’s website to see what sleep scientists were suggesting to improve quality time with your mattress. Turns out, going commando might be the answer and I’ve compiled a list of five reasons why. 

Start Dreaming Faster

Nothing is worse than tossing and turning in the sheets for hours, unable to fall asleep no matter how tired you seem to be. Scientists at the National Sleep Foundation suggest that regulating body temperature might be the key to entering a deep sleep quicker, and the fabric of your pajamas could be preventing your body from naturally doing this. Ditching the pj’s ensures your body maintains a comfortable temperature, so you’ll be out like a light in no time. 

Stay Asleep Longer

If you find yourself constantly waking up in the middle of the night, your sleep attire might be to blame. Sleep experts found that heavy-weight fabrics, like wool, conduct heat during the night, driving your body temperature up. Meanwhile, light-weight fabrics, like cotton or silk, provide no insulation which can cause your body temperature to drop. Sleeping naked cures those night-time sweats and chills, so you can spend more time in dreamland. 

Wake Up to More Youthful-Looking Skin

Falling asleep at a comfortable body temperature does wonders for your skin. Scientists at the National Sleep Foundation warn that overheating during the night negatively impacts the amount of growth hormones your body produces. These growth hormones aid our body in it’s natural anti-aging and repairing regiment which takes place when we’re fast asleep. So, sleeping in the nude will prevent you from overheating and allow your body to work its magic. 

Build Stronger, Healthier Muscles

There is plenty of sleep science out there detailing the benefits of REM sleep, and experts at the National Sleep Foundation claim that getting at least seven-hours of sleep a night dramatically helps the muscle-healing process. It’s all in the growth hormones our body emits while our eyes are closed which increase the blood flow to your muscles, repairing and strengthening them. Going to bed naked promotes a comfortable body temperature where your growth hormones can thrive, so you can improve your muscle coordination without having to step foot in a gym. 

Improve Your Hygienic Health

Believe it or not, falling asleep exposed to the elements is actually beneficial to your personal hygiene, and sacrificing a good night’s rest can lead to increased levels of inflammation and stress hormones. The National Sleep Foundation attributes these stress hormones to having detrimental effects on our immune system, which helps our bodies fight annoying infections like yeast infections. Quite literally, “airing out” your privates while you’re catching some z’s will help keep your stress hormones in check and your personal hygiene immaculate. 

So, body temperature seems to be the major player in the game of improving sleep quality. Finding that optimal temperature can be difficult when wearing clothes in the sheets, leading to restless nights and fatigue-filled days. Choosing to wear your birthday suit the next time your head hits the pillow creates the perfect environment for your body to do its thing, allowing you to reap the benefits the next morning. Fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and feel the rejuvenating effects of not being restricted by fabrics and frills.
