We exist in a world that's mostly predictable. We strive to anticipate what's coming in the next few days and weeks of our lives, and that's just the way we prefer it.

Sometimes, life throws us curveballs, making things a bit unpredictable. In those moments, we're taken out of our comfort zone, and figuring out what to expect becomes a bit of a challenge.

Enter these one-of-a-kind photos. These are items recognized by some but known to only a handful. Luckily, the Internet steps in to shed light on them. How many were you already aware of?

1. "What is this thing? The inside opens up to empty space, it's disconnected from the desk below."

It's a bed/lap desk. There's a metal bar underneath that fits into the wooden tray, allowing you to adjust it to various angles for reading and other activities.

It's known as a 'speakeasy,' and it's a way to chat with someone without opening the door.

3. "My clothes pegs are all individually numbered. Why is that?"

Various molds are assigned distinct numbers. If the items start to emerge from the machine in a messed-up way, they can figure out which mold needs to be swapped out by checking the corresponding number.

4. "What is this thing on my wall with a round hole and a small screen inside?"

It's a pool access alarm designed to alert you if the gate door is left open, mainly to prevent kids or pets from wandering in and facing the risk of drowning.

5. "Just bought a house, found this hidden inside the front bushes. Screws in a wooden ball, looks like a mace. What was/is this used for?"

People have been into this trend of crafting DIY Allium flowers using recycled metal and various bits of scrap.

6. "What is this thing bolted near the door of our garbage disposal area in Germany? It's a bit bigger than my fist. It's not a lock."

It's called a "Schlüsselrohr." The dumpsters are likely locked to stop people from diving into them, and this thing holds the key.

7. "What is this thing on this pocketknife? The first one has a little spinning thing. What is it for?"
