Creating costumes during the process of making a biopic might seem like a typical part of the job. After all, all it takes is making copies of well-known outfits.
Although biopics always try to be as accurate as possible, the process is more complicated and time-consuming than most realize.
Recreating a character's style from scratch takes a lot of effort, and the entire process starts with a thorough analysis of the person's image on which the movie character is based.
Therefore, a careful look at the historical period is necessary for the costume to appear as it did back when the character was alive. Designers also have to pick appropriate fabrics and jewelry.
Fortunately, the film industry has many talented experts who did the job of recreating ancient costumes perfectly, and here are 10 of the best of them.
1. Glenn Close As Marquise De Pompadour In Dangerous Liaisons (1988)
Liaisons is a movie that was made with a limited budget. However, the costume department did not disappoint.
Generally speaking, the entire movie is quite impressive, including the costumes and the general depiction of the historical period it explores.
Most notably, the characters in the movie wear clothes that are pretty similar to what the people they played wore back in the day, as shown in their famous paintings.
For instance, Glenn Close wears a rich draped dress consisting of dark-blue satin, and it is incredibly similar to the outfit Marquise de Pompadour wore while posing for a painting back in 1756. The only notable difference is the color.
2. Elisabeth In Bavaria As Depicted In Sissi (1955)
Sissi is an Austrian drama and the first of three movies dedicated to Elisabeth in Bavaria, a well-known Austrian ruler from the 1800s.
Granted, many costumes in the film are not accurately depicted, but one of them stands out for accurately representing the era during which the empress reigned.
The painting on which the costume in the movie is based was done by Franz Xaver Winterhalter back in 1865.
3. The Scandalous Lady W (2015)
The Scandalous Lady W drama stands out for many reasons, including the unforgettable scarlet dress the horse-riding lady wears. Many people didn't notice that the costume was a very accurate copy of the original dress, as shown in a painting by Joshua Renolds.
From the look of things, the designers missed nothing, not even the lacing at the back of the costume.
4. Queen Elizabeth I In Elizabeth R (1971) And Mary Queen Of Scots (2018)
Queen Elizabeth I has appeared in several movies. However, only a few were accurate as far as showing the sort of costumes she wore back in the day goes.
In the 1971 series Queen Elizabeth R, where Glenda Jackson played her, and the 2018 movie Mary Queen of Scots, where Margot Robbie portrayed her, the famous ruler's costume is very accurately depicted.
In both of these films, costume designers managed to make a famous costume while ensuring that all the details were as they appeared in the original costume.
5. The King's Speech (2010)
The King's Speech had to be made with a limited budget, affecting the costume department. They could not make an authentic uniform for the king.
Instead, they rented a uniform from Angels Costumes in London and bought shoulder straps at a flea market.
Nonetheless, the result was remarkably accurate.
6. Sherilyn Fenn As Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story (1995)
The biographical film Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story did a great job recreating many clothes the diva wore. This includes the famous slip dress she wore during the 1958 movie Cat on a Hot Roof.
7. Marilyn & Bobby: Her Final Affair (1993)
A lot of stars have tried to imitate Marilyn Monroe's look, and costume designers have stopped at nothing to ensure their recreations are as accurate as possible.
During the making of this dramatic film, the designers tried to recreate the semi-transparent dress she had during President Kennedy's birthday. However, here, the attire has been enhanced with embroidery.
8. Diana (2013)
The biopic, Diana, had the benefit of having designer Jacques Azagury helping remake some of the clothes Princess Diana wore. He had worked with her in real life.
The costume department was able to make many of Diana's costumes. However, of all the dresses, the beautiful silk dress from Versace the princess wore during a charity evening in Sydney back in 1996 stood out.
9. Princess Margaret In The Crown (2016 - Present)
The Crown series has been quite a hit. The designers also did a fantastic job of recreating the costumes worn by the British royal family.
However, Princess Margaret's dress as she posed for a photographer is worth a special mention.
10. Queen Elizabeth II In The Crown (2016 - Present)
The Crown series also did a great job replicating Queen Elizabeth II's blue dress during a state reception organized by the Kennedys.
So, which of these costume recreations impressed you the most?
